Colin Maslan
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who brings a strengths-based approach to working with children, youth, and their families. I knew early on in my previous career as a special education teacher that clinical social work was my calling, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work closely with families in supporting their children and teens. My interventions are rooted in providing psychoeducation and honoring client self-determination, helping clients to better understand their experiences.
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions to assist children, youth, and young adults in recognizing the interconnectedness between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I am trained in the use of Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and phobia-based anxiety disorders. I have also received training in mindfulness-based interventions aimed at assisting clients in using breathwork and meditation to reduce their stress.
I earned my Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern California with a concentration in Youth, Children and Families, and my B.A. in Sociology and Criminal Justice from the University of Arizona. Throughout my Master’s, I provided mental health services to public school students grades K-12 in Glendale and Irvine, both in-person and via Telehealth. I have found my training in play therapy particularly useful in fostering therapeutic engagement with younger clients. I have seen first-hand clients developing problem-solving skills and increasing their frustration tolerance during Lego builds. It’s no secret that I also enjoy Legos!
Prior to starting my Masters, I taught special education at Sand Hill School in Palo Alto and Spurwink Services in Maine. After my Masters, I practiced 4 years at Wellspring Psychotherapy Center as an Associate Clinical Social Worker. I have experience working with youth and young adults with a broad range of diagnoses including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), verbal learning disabilities, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), as well as challenges associated with emotional dysregulation, physical illness, stress management, self-esteem, and family conflict.
Furthermore, I have played a pivotal role in guiding children, adolescents, and young adults through a myriad of issues, including heightened sensitivity, executive functioning difficulties, navigating social media, and excessive gaming. I extend unwavering support to individuals grappling with LGBTQIA-related questions or obstacles, fostering an inclusive and empathetic environment for their growth and well-being. In my free time, I love exploring the outdoors with my wife, daughter, and two dogs. I’m an avid mountain biker and cyclist and also enjoy trail running, backpacking, and snowboarding.
